Why linux is having so much trouble getting into the desktop.

If you use technology, you have used linux. It's in servers, like google. It's used to make movies like avatar, and it's used in the army, so why is it not in the desktop?

The consumer market is a different machine, you can sell linux in the servers by showing how it's code is better. But you sell to the consumer by showing then a cheeky commercial that doesn't have to do too much with there product. Linux does not have that kinda of marketing machine( For the desktop, we have all seen the droid commercials). What I mean is that good is not what sells in the desktop market, little things sell operating systems.

For instance I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my sisters computer, she admits it runs faster and can last longer, and I got all the programs she needs on it. She still goes into vista, why? Because the skype in vista has moving smiley faces! Most consumers are like this, overlooking the big picture for little things like this. The switch from 9.04 to 9.10 for me was amazing... Yes, there were more bugs, I couldn't burn cd's for a while, but the inside doesn't matter as much as the fact that is is much better looking, it looks new and that is what matters in a desktop os. For their server, yes, go with stability, but for the desktop you need to remember who you are selling it too.
